bertram chronos lightmeter

This lightmeter takes the form of a pocket (fob) watch, and is a rather delightful object in itself. It was made in (West) Germany in the early 1950's. Construction is of a light metal, presumably aluminium. They crop up on eBay quite often, rarely for more than $20 or so.

The little silver button near the strap pops the lid of this clam-shell meter open, and simultaneously a little pair of barn doors swing open at the front of the meter to permit light to enter the selenium cell within.

The ASA range is 6 to 200, but it's a no-brainer to set it at imaginary 400 or 800 settings as well (in the photograph above, I've moved the ASA dial one position past 200 - it is blank, but it is equivalent to 400). Beyond the imaginary 800 setting, the EV window moves out of range, so 1600 and beyond are not possible.

Despite having a selenium cell, the meter is accurate - in fact it agrees 100% with the built-in meter in my Canon D60, which I think is a remarkable situation given the age of the meter. Because this meter conforms to my quest for portable gear, it now wins a permanent place with me whenever heading out with a Zorki, FED, Periflex or Welta Weltur.
