canon f4.5-5.6/70-300mm is with defractive optics (do)
This is a lens that was made for travelling, its "defractive optics"
technology allowing for an extremely compact design for its focal length.
What's more, it produces corking good images, though slightly softer
and less contrasty than those from my 70-200mm
f4 L... both traits which are easily corrected with some post processing.

It has been reported (and demonstrated) that this lens can suffer from flare under certain circumstances. I've had a hard time replicating these circumstances. Here are a couple of shots in which sun and glare played a large part, but with no negative impact on the results:

Against all reason or commonsense, I went right ahead and tried using
this lens with a teleconverter. One cannot use a Canon EF Teleconverter (ie, neither the 1.4x or 2.0x) with this
lens, but most 3rd party TC's will work fine. I picked up a relatively
cheap Kenko 1.5x 4-element TC (by no means the best they make), and
was surprised by the results. No serious wildlife photographer will want to
use one, as autofocus is dodgy and it becomes far too slow a lens, but for the occasional shooter without great expectations, it's
adequate. Here are two examples taken with this combination,
at 450mm (300mm + 1.5x):
