BARCELONA ARCHIVE

7 September - We left France this morning, travelling across the Pyranees, reaching the Spanish frontier just a few kilometres east of Andorra before winding back down from the mountains to reach Barcelona late this afternoon.

Tracy (whose birthday is today!) is standing in front of the Maremagnum centre, Barcelona's answer to Sydney's Darling Harbour, only in much better taste. It is full of tapas bars, cinemas, shops, and even an Imax theatre!  This is a lousy photo - I apologise. It shows a bunch of buskers performing Latin American numbers in the Plaça Catalunya, the city's main plaza, which is where we're staying. They left the usual Peruvian pipe-bands you see in most places around the world (Circular Quay, for instance) for dead. The monument behind the band to the right is dedicated to Fransesc Macià, a former president of the autonomuos region of Catalunya, of which Barcelona is the capitol.

Barcelona is synonymous with Gaudi, the brilliant architect who designed several buildings in the city. This is Sagrada Familia, which was not completed at the time of his sudden death in 1926 (when he was run over by a tram), and, as is evident from the crane in this photograph, is still being constructed. Another Gaudi building.... the Casa Batlló.

As can be seen in this photograph taken at the Park Güell, Optus have already strung their cable through this neighbourhood. Park Güell is full of crazy walkways and creations of Gaudi's twisted genius.

This lizard adorning the steps leading up into the park is my favourite of Gaudi's creations. Gaudi's "Gingerbread houses", at the entrance to the park.
