kerala and madras, india, april 1989

I visited Kerala State, via Madras, because I'd always wanted to do the "backwater" trip - a journey through canals and waterways that form a kind of inland sea along a whole long stretch of the coastline.  As it turned out, there's a lot more to Kerala than the backwaters, and I loved the place so much, that I returned again a couple of years later.  These photographs are from that first trip.

Tamil Nadu: Madras (Chennai)

I flew into Madras, where I spent a day before heading deep south.  I rather liked the city; although bustling, it retains the charm of a small town.

Parry's Corner in Madras offers a moveable feast for the eyes. It's inconceivable that one could ever get bored here watching the traffic go by.

At Parry's Corner, Madras:  the symbols of India: basket, baby, bovine, bicycle, sari, and last, but not least, an Ambassador automobile.

Kerala: Cochin (Kochi)

From Madras, I flew down to Cochin, a fascinating town (in fact three towns, linked by bridges and ferries).  These fishing nets are kind of a "trademark" of Cochin.

Kerala: Alleppey (Allappuzha)

The backwaters, near Alleppey (south of Cochin).  They are just breathtakingly beautiful, especially in the early morning, when this photograph was taken.   A rice barge is in the centre of the picture.

Canal bank conversation, Alleppey.

There is constant activity on the backwaters - all kinds of vessel carrying an endless variety of goods.
